The meeting is convened by the President of the United Nations General Assembly and aimed at mobilizing political will at the national, regional and international levels for pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. Little Amal is the giant puppet of a 10 year old Syrian refugee girl. Since July 2021 she has travelled over 9,000 km across 12 countries representing all children fleeing war, violence and persecution and each with their own story, Little Amal’s urgent message to the world is “Don’t forget about us”. They are consequently very vulnerable to trade fluctuations. The United Nations believes that international buffer stocks or reserve supplies of those ten commodities would help stabilize their prices. Negotiations are under way to establish a Common Fund from which to finance such reserves.

The Secretary-General convened leaders from government, business, finance, civil society and other sectors to accelerate climate action and advance a just transition in the face of the overshoot of the 1.5°C limit, which is now inevitable and will likely happen within the next ten years.
