Headline UNFPA Assists Burgeoning Population of Street Kids in Mexico City
Caption Description Marisol, age twenty-four, washes her infant son, Diego, at a shelter in Mexico City. She is among the 3,000 teenagers and young people living on the streets of the Mexican capital today – although unofficial estimates of that number may be up to ten times higher. The UN Population Fund (UNFPA), in partnership with the Mexican Government, is working to assist this vast and vulnerable population, which is prone to drug abuse (particularly of an inhalant made from industrial solvents, called “mona”), prostitution for food and money, and membership in gangs.
