Headline A.U. Chief Visits Somalia
Caption Description Jean Ping (second from right), Chairperson of the African Union (A.U.) Commission, speaks at a joint press conference with Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed (second from left) and Ramtane Lamamra (third from right), A.U. Commissioner for Peace and Security, at Villa Somalia, the complex that houses the Transitional Federal Government, during Mr. Ping’s one-day visit to Mogadishu.
Mr. Ping said that the whole of Africa was proud of what the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) had achieved with limited resources in helping retrieve Mogadishu from the grip of the insurgent group Al Shabaab, and that in spite of nearly two-decades of conflict and recent drought and famine, Somalia was at a 'turning point' for the first time in many years.
