Headline
UN Peacekeeping Chief Briefs on Arrest of Côte d’Ivoire's Former President
Caption Description
Alain Le Roy, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, briefs correspondents on the surrender, today, of former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo to the forces of internationally recognized new president, Alassane Ouattara, in Abidjan. The surrender comes after months of Mr. Gbagbo refusing to accept his loss in 2010 elections and step down from office, causing countrywide violence between his forces and those of Mr. Ouattara. According to Mr. Le Roy, the former president is in the custody of the Ouattara camp and officers of the UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) are providing for his personal security, per Mr. Gbagbo’s request.
