With its large drum capacity (usually 75 litres), the device frees women and children from having to spend a large portion of every day dedicated to collecting water for their households. The African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) has distributed some 3,000 such rollers across Darfur.

Fighting resumed last August despite a signed peace accord, forcing South Sudanese to flee in search of safety, assistance, and protection, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
