Headline Iraqi Archaeological Treasure Thought to be 6,000 Years Old
Caption Description The Citadel town of Erbil is an impressive elevated settlement that was continuously inhabited, until recently, for thousands of years. Archaeological finds trace its history back 6,000 years, and it is assumed that the fortified town itself was most likely present during the Assyrian Period (1365-612 BC). The citadel, with its circular form, rises on an artificial mound in the city centre of Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan, Iraq, and has been included as one of the 100 most endangered cultural sites in the world by the World Monument Fund.
