The Center was formerly the notorious government detention facility, Escuela Superior de Mecánica de la Armada (ESMA).

The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo is an Argentine human rights association formed in response to the National Reorganization Process, during the military dictatorship by Jorge Rafael Videla, with the goal of finding the desaparecidos, and then determining those responsible of crimes against humanity and to promote their trial and sentencing.
