Caption Description A wide view of Shanidar Cave.  Christine McNab, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, and Head of the Development and Humanitarian Support component of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), and her team walk towards Shanidar Cave which is an archaeological site in the Zagros Mountains in northern Iraq. The site is located in the valley of the Great Zab. It was excavated from 1957–1961 by Ralph Solecki and his team from Columbia University and yielded the first adult Neanderthal skeletons in Iraq, dating between 60–80,000 years BP.
