A child holds up bullets collected from the ground in Rounyn, a village about 15 kilometres from Shangil Tobaya, North Darfur. Most of the village’s population has fled to camps for internally displaced because of heavy fighting between Government of Sudan and rebel forces.

An ominous mushroom cloud rose thousands of feet into the air blotting out the sun and showering deadly ash and radioactive debris on what remained of the town and people of Hiroshima, Japan.

Headline Survivors of Unexploded Ordnances in Darfur
Caption Description Abdurrahim Ahmed Mohamed, age twelve, lost his right hand and the sight in his left eye when he and his friends played with unexploded ordnance (UXO) as small children in their village. Abdurrahim, who wants to become a doctor, is still struggling to learn how to write with his left hand.
UXOs are explosive weapons (bombs, shells, grenades, land mines, naval mines, etc.) that did not explode when they were employed and still pose a risk of detonation, potentially many decades after they were used or discarded.  In Darfur, as a consequence of the ongoing conflict, UXOs are a grave concern for civilians, especially children, who are at risk of serious injury or death.  To promote awareness of UXOs, the International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action is held on 4 April.
