Headline The United Kingdom Signs Slavery Protocol
Caption Description The Hon. Mrs. E. Emmet, Representative of the United Kingdom, signs a Protocol adopted by the current General Assembly, which formally transfers to the U.N. the functions and powers exercised by the League of Nations under the Slavery Convention of 1926.  This Protocol makes the Secretary-General of the U.N. the official custodian of the Slavery Convention and channels to him the reports of governments on measures taken by them to eradicate any renmants of slavery that may exist.
Mrs. Emmet signed without reservation as to later ratification, thus, the Protocol entered into force immediately for the United Kingdom.
Standing at left is Mr. Anthony Leriche, of the U.N. Legal Department.
