Geological Survey in Argentina
Caption Description
In order to determine the existence and extent of mineral deposits in a promising section of the Argentine Andes, the government is conducting a geological survey of the area. The UN Special Fund, with the United Nations as its Executing Agency, is assisting the project by providing expert services, fellowships, equipment and sub-contracts. The Fund has allocated $1,166,900 towards the project and the Argentine government is contributing an estimated equivalent of $1,244,000. If such potential resources are discovered and exploited, the city of Mendoza, whose economy is now predominantly agricultural, could be transformed into an important mining and industrial centre.
View of the oil refinery at Mendoza, where the discovery of mineral wealth in the nearby Cordilleranos could have a crucial impact on the development of industry.
