Portrait of Mr. Sean McBride who was appointed as United Nations Commissioner for Namibia by the General Assembly on 18 December 1973. He took up his appointment on 1 January 1974 and will serve for an initial period of a year. Mr. McBride succeeds Agha Abdul Hamid, who has served as Acting Commissioner since December 1969.
Born on 26 January 1904, Mr. McBride attended St. Louis de Gunzague School in Paris and Mount St. Benedict School in Wexford, Ireland. He was a journalist for a number of years before being called to the Irish Bar in 1937. He later became a Senior Counsel and had an extensive practice in the High Court and Supreme Court. In 1946 he founded and led the Clann na Poblachta (Republican Party) and was a Member of the Irish Parliament from 1947 to 1958. Mr. McBride served as Minister for External Affairs from 1948 to 1951 and was President of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Council of Europe in 1950. He was Vice-President of the Organization for European Economic Co.-operation from 1948 to 1951. Mr. McBride has been active in a number of non-government organizations. He is Chairman of the Irish Association of Jurists and was Secretary-General of the International Commission of Jurists from 1963 to 1970. He is Chairman of Amnesty International and the International Peace Bureau, Geneva. He is the author of a pamphlet, Civil Liberty (1948), and a book, Our People -Our Money (1951).
