Yugoslavia Donates Equestrian Statue to U.N. Headquarters
Caption Description
At a brief ceremony this afternoon in the north gardens of the U.N. General Assembly area, an equestrian statue symbolizing Peace was formally presented to the United Nations as a gift to U.N. Headquarters from the Government of Yugoslavia. Stating that the gift symbolized the Yugoslav people's desire for peace, their devotion to the United Nations Charter and their faith in the future of the Organization, Ambassador Joza Brilej, Yugoslavia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, made the presentation, and Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld accepted the gift on behalf of the United Nations. The 16-foot high bronze statue of a woman on horseback stands on a 26-foot high pedestal faced with blocks of rose-colored marble quarried in Yugoslavia. It is the work of Mr. Antun Augustincic, a Yugoslav sculptor.
This photograph shows U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld delivering a brief address at the ceremony, as he expressed his gratitude for the gift, congratulated the sculptor and thanked the Yugoslav Government for the confidence and faith it expressed in the future of the United Nations. Second from left, is Assembly President, Dr. Eelco N. Van Kleffens and, beside him, Ambassador Joza Brilej.
