UN Secretariat Aids Victims of Chilean Earthquake
Caption Description
A devastating earthquake struck the provinces of Santiago, Valparaiso, Aconcagua and Coquimbo, which lie in the central zone of Chile, on 28 March. Almost 90 per cent of the houses in the towns located within a radius of 100 kilometers from the epicentrum of the earthquake were damaged and rendered uninhabitable. Earthquake damage also included the disruption of water systems, electricity systems and communications, including roads and railways. Schools and other public buildings were likewise damaged.
In response to the UN Secretariat's appeal the staff members contributed a sum of $2,000 which was sent to Chile towards the construction of a primary school in the town of Llay-Llay, near the epicentrum of the earthquake.
Mr. Jose Roiz-Bennett (2nd from left), Under-Secretary for Special Political Affairs, informs Mr. Javier Illanes, Chargé d'Affaires of the Chilean Mission to the UN, of the collection at a ceremony held today. Looking on are (l. to r.): Mr. C.V. Narasimhan, Under-Secretary for General Assembly Affairs and Chief of Cabinet; Mrs. Carmen Flores Korn, member of the UN Committee for the Relief of the Chilean Earthquake; and Mr. Franklin E. Kozik, Treasurer of the Committee.
