By August 1995, the fighting in Chechnya had caused an estimated 250,000 people to flee to the neighboring autonomous republics of North Ossetia, Daghestan and Ingushetia. A similar number of people were displaced inside Chechnya. Between 20,000 and 30,000 inhabitants of Grozny have died and the city centre is destroyed. [c. 1997]
