Demonstration Centre for Rehabilitation of the Blind, in Cairo
Caption Description
A demonstration centre for the rehabilitation of the blind was established early in 1953 in suburban Cairo, with the help of the U.N. Technical Assistance Administration (TAA). The U.N. aid ended and the Centre is now administered and operated entirely by Egyptians. It is considered as a model for similar establishments to be set up in other countries.
The Centre includes an elementary school where blind Egyptian boys are taught Braille and the normal school subjects, and a vocational school where blind Egyptian adults learn trades that will enable them to earn a living. Special courses are organized regularly for teachers of the blind from other Arab Nations. The Centre is located in a four-story building placed at its disposal by the Egyptian government; it has the first Braille library in the Middle East and modem Braille printing presses provided by TAA. Here, students are seen playing at tug-of-war in the Centre's yard.
