Headline General Assembly Honours Recipients of Dag Hammarskjold Peacekeeping Award
Caption Description At a special commemorative meeting to mark the fiftieth anniversary of United Nations peacekeeping, the General Assembly honours the first three recipients of the Dag Hammarskjold Medal – awarded to those who have lost their lives in United Nations peacekeeping operations. The Medal was established by the Security Council on 22 June 1997.
The first three Medals were awarded to Commandant Rene de Labarriere of France, who served with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) and was killed in June 1948 by an explosion; Count Folke Bernadette of Sweden, United Nations Mediator for Palestine who was murdered in Jerusalem by terrorists on 17 December 1948; and Dag Hammarskjold, the second Secretary-General, who put in place the main elements of peacekeeping and died on 18 September 1961 in what is now Zambia, when his plane crashed on his fourth trip to the region in connection with United Nations operations in the Congo.
Pictured (left to right) are Nadia Younes, United Nations Chief of Protocol; Elinor Hammarskjold, grand-niece of the second Secretary-General; Count Bertil Bernadotte, son of Count Folke Bernadotte; Jean de Labarriere, son of Commandant Rene de Labarriere; and Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Seated behind are General Assembly President Didier Opertti Badan (Uruguay) and Jin Yonjian (right), Under-Secretary-General for General Assembly Affairs and Conference Services.
