Headline
Geological Survey to Spark Drive for Economic Development in Nepal
Caption Description
Though brought into the news from time to time in recent years by expeditions to Mount Everest and other Himalayan peaks, Nepal is the least known of the United Nations' newest members. Lying in the Himalayan mountains, between Tibet and India, the country has remained in virtual isolation for centuries, but the work which a United Nations geologist has been carrying out in Nepal, may well result in a much wider knowledge of the country. Originally begun in 1951 as a Swiss technical assistance project, since 1953 the geologist's work has been continued under the United Nations technical assistance programme. It comprises a detailed survey of the country's geological structure, an essential first step in assessing its natural resources and developing its economy. The work has been extremely slow and difficult. The geologist, Mr. Toni Hagen, has had to travel mostly by foot, scaling snow-clad peaks, crossing turbulent mountain streams often swollen by heavy monsoon rains and using trails over almost perpendicular rock walls. He hopes to complete what will be the first detailed geological map of the country sometime this year or early next year.
Photograph shows members of Mr. Hagen's crew beginning the ascent along one of the hill trails up the Himalayas in Eastern Nepal. [No exact date]
