Furthering Civil Aviation in the Congo
Caption Description
The importance of civil aviation in the Congo arises from the country's large territory and the fact that other means of transport are relatively undeveloped. After the departure of most foreign aviation specialists following independence, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), at the Government's request, supplied instructors for a national school which was established in 1961 to train Congolese personnel as air traffic controllers, radio operators, radio technicians, and airport managers. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with ICAO as Executing Agency, is now contributing to the work of this Civil Aviation Training Institute here by providing experts, fellowships, and additional training equipment.
Three Congolese air controllers supervise air traffic in the control tower at N’Djili Airport. ICAO expert M. S. Yurdover (Turkey) can be seen in background. [No exact date]
