Caption Description
The UN Department of Public Information (DPI) maintains at United Nations Headquarters a Visitors Service Section which handles queries from visitors and conducts public briefings and guided tours of the Headquarters buildings. The tour service began in October 1952; it was operated by the American Association for the United Nations until June 1955, when it became part of the DPI’s Public Liaison and Distribution Division. Initiated with a staff of 50 guides, the service is now manned by 70 of them and has conducted tours for over three million visitors. The tours can be conducted in any of 19 different languages.
This picture shows five of the guides and two interns singing songs at a Christmas party at UN Headquarters. They are from left: Yassin El-Ayouty, intern from Egypt; Nille Neilsen, of Denmark; Wilma Klein, of the USA; S.T. Bhandary, intern from Nepal; Tyrre Tyspersen, of Denmark; Marjolijn Penraat, of the Netherlands; Patricia Dorsey of the USA.
The interns are at the UN under a programme under which they spend a year at Headquarters, serving part of their time as guides, when they are not attending an extensive course of lectures and seminars on the United Nations.
