Caption Description
New Guinea, which is administered by Australia, is generally acknowledged to be the most underdeveloped of all the territories under trusteeship. In the Eastern Highlands region, where the land is unsuitable for cash crops, the indigenous population derives a cash income from their natural timber stands. Logs are pit sawn and transported to a factory after being measured and paid for by the Australian district officer on his weekly visit to the villages. Forests cover more than seventy per cent of the total area of New Guinea, but because of the rugged nature of the terrain much of the timber is difficult of access.
Here, villagers watch a district officer measuring their timber. (Read ""From Stone Age to Local Government in New Guinea”, in the July 1956 issue of the UNITED NATIONS REVIEW, for detailed information on the political development of that trust territory.)
