The island of Jamaica, one of the Greater Antilles, lies 90 miles south of Cuba on the northern fringe of the Caribbean Sea. The island, with an area of 4,411 square miles, supports a population of 1.6 million people, nearly 20% of whom live in the capital, Kingston and its environs. Mountains cover about six-seventh of the land and rise as high as 7,000 feet. Its climate varies with location and altitude – temperatures ranging downward from an average of 79° Fahrenheit and yearly rainfall ranging downward from 110 to 22 inches. The mainstays of the island’s economy are bauxite and sugar.
