Headline Refugee Unemployment Problem Relieved by UNHCR's Office
Caption Description The closing down and reduction of operations in factories and lead mines brought serious unemployment to Lavrion, a seaport town near Athens, where the Government built 100 houses for Greek refugees from Romania. Lack of adequate supplies of food was followed by deterioration of health conditions.
Deeply concerned with the problem, the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees transferred 30 refugee children for three months to camps where more food was available and better health conditions prevailed. But, upon their return, the children’s health was again endangered, conditions having further deteriorated in the meantime. The Mayor of Lavrion initiated an Emergency Feeding Centre for children, to alleviate the situation.
This photograph shows the children waiting for meals at the Emergency Feeding Centre. [No exact date]
