Mekong River Survey
Caption Description
An extensive survey of the lower Mekong River basin is at present under way with a view to its development for the benefit of the four riparian countries: Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Viet Nam. This project, which is under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East, has the active backing of Australia, India, Canada, France, Iran, Japan, New Zealand, The United Kingdom and the United States, as well as the UN and several of its agencies.
A member of a surveying team from the Philippines is seen here at work in his office. The Philippine ground survey group in the Mekong valley is operating under the Canadian aid programme. The data collected by ground surveys supplements data from aerial mapping. Canada’s contribution amounts to $1.3 million.
