Caption Description An Afghan nurse of a rural health unit, located in a village near Kabul. The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF are assisting the Government in carrying out its health programme.

The rural development programme in Afghanistan began as a pilot project in two villages in 1954. Subsequently, major projects in health and sanitation, handicrafts and cottage industries, agriculture, and education were initiated by the Government. With assistance of the UN and its specialized agencies, the development area has been extended to about four hundred villages. In all the projects undertaken, efforts are made to promote the development of local institutions, particularly the village development councils.
