UN Assistance in the Congo
Caption Description
Some 11,500 soldiers from nine countries are now on duty with the UN Force in the Republic of the Congo, helping to restore order and calm in the country. Assistance from these and other countries, in addition, includes technical and medical personnel, air transport, heavy materials, food and various supplies. UN Specialized Agencies are also cooperating in the UN effort.
The port and its cranes have been silent until today, paralyzing all river transport, and preventing transfer of cargo to railroad going to the seaport of Matadi. However, today, activity is starting again, as seen in this photo, and traffic is beginning to move again, under the direction of Lt. General Raymond A. Wheeler, who was sent to the Congo by the UN Secretary-General to organize the necessary work to prevent the silting of the Congo River.
