Aerial view of a Kenyan Navy launch just off the coast of the Somali port city of Kismayo.
The last bastion of the once feared and brutal Al Shabaab extremist group, Kismayo fell to forces of the Somali National Army (SNA), the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the Government-affiliated Ras Kimboni Brigade two days ago.
Uruguayan peacekeepers with the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) practice a ship-boarding exercise on the “UN 12” vessel on Tanganyika Lake near Uvira, South Kivu.
The troops’ mission on the Lake is to protect commercial navigation against piracy and armed groups who carry out attacks and extort illegal taxes.

Headline The United Nations and the Law of the Sea
Caption Description Although there already exists a body of international law pertaining to the high seas, territorial waters of nations, the continental shelf and so on, the definition of the precise limits of the sea-bed and ocean floor which lie beyond national jurisdiction remains a most controversial question. Over the years, various nations, particularly those with large fishing industries, have been claiming from the traditional three to twelve miles up to two-hundred miles, as measured from the coast. In 1970 the General Assembly declared that the area of the sea-bed and ocean floor beyond these limits should be an international domain for peaceful uses on behalf of all peoples. A Committee on the Sea-bed is currently engaged in the formidable task of examining all the complicated legal issues that will arise in putting this declaration into effect.
Rotterdam is such a busy port that its harbour pilot must fly out by helicopter to meet incoming vessels, such as this one seen through the pilot’s bubble shield. The port’s operations thus extend far into the North Sea. [Exact date unknown]
