The unrestricted exploitation of wildlife has led to the disappearance of many animal species at an alarming rate, destroying Earth's biological diversity and upsetting the ecological balance. The problem is particularly acute in developing countries. Scientists estimate that various animal and plant species may be disappearing at the rate of one every day, with thousands more on the verge of extinction. Widely sought for everything from medical research, medicinal supplies, and display in zoos, to satisfying the demands of high fashion, the illegal trade in wildlife is a lucrative business, making it difficult to control. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is actively involved in working with governments, scientists, private organizations and other concerned groups to preserve and protect our endangered species.

Headline United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (UNCHE) Meets at Stockholm
Caption Description In response to rising world concern about the conditions of man’s habitat, representatives of some 130 nations converged on Stockholm, Sweden, this month in an unprecedented meeting to seek ways to translate that concern into a global attack on the common perils menacing the environment.  The two-week UN Conference on the Human Environment (5-16 June) has been called by the General Assembly with the aim of producing an international political consensus on ways of preserving and improving the environment for this and future generations.  About 1,200 delegates, many of them high-level decision-makers in government, are in Stockholm for the session, which is the first world-wild UN gathering to take a comprehensive look at man’s surroundings.
