Sudan Developes its Forest Resources
Caption Description
The forests constitute a rich resource of the 1,000,000-square mile area of Southern Sudan. The forests yield bark for tanning, wood for construction purposes and matches. During World War II, the Sudan forests supplied the Allied Armies with timber when supplies were cut off from the Scandanavian countries. The sawmills set up at that time have since been renovated and modernized with
the help of Food and Agriculture Organization experts. The FAO helps and advises the Government of Sudan in the care and protection of the forests, and in increasing the production of timber, planting of new forests, taking inventory of the existing forests, and in the establishing of new sawmill factories.
Timber from the forests in Wau is used to make furniture at this factory operated by the Sudan Government. A lathe operator is shown at this machine.
