Special Commission Team Inspects Construction of Chemical Weapons Destruction Plant in Iraq
Caption Description
A United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) inspection team set up under Security Council resolution 687 (1991) in connection with the disposal of Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction, inspected work in progress at the Muthanna State Establishment of the construction of a plant for the destruction of chemical weapons. The team was led by Ron Manley, comprising of 14 experts and support staff from eight countries. The team observed the work on an incineration which will be used to destroy mustard agent as well as other chemicals. The construction of a large-scale hydrolysis plant for the neutralization of nerve agent was nearing completion. After observing trial runs, the team instructed the Iraqi authorities on ways to improve safety. Large-scale destruction of chemical agents will begin in the summer of 1992.
