Advance units of a new UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) began moving into southern Lebanon on 22 March 1978. The purpose of the force, spelled out in a Security Council resolution of 19 March (resolution 425) is to confirm the withdrawal of Israeli forces, restore international peace and security, and assist the Government of Lebanon in ensuring the return of its responsibilities, it is estimated that it must have at least five battalions each of about 600 all ranks, in addition to logistics units, for a total strength in the order of 4,000.
