Headline Narcotic Drugs Commission Opens its Fourth Special Session

Caption Description The Commission on Narcotic Drugs opened its fourth special session at the Palais des Nations in Geneva this morning. The session will last two weeks. Pedro Ojeda Paullada (Mexico) was elected Chairman for the session. Other officers elected this morning were: Edward A. Babaian (Soviet Union), First Vice-Chairman; Bror Rexed (Sweden), Second Vice-Chairman, and Donald M. Smith (Canada), Rapporteur. At the suggestion of the Chairman, the Commission also elected a Steering Committee to assist it in the organization of its work. The 30-member Commission is one of the functional commissions of the Economic and Social Council. It is the main policy-making body within the UN system for the control of drugs. The report of the session will be submitted to the next session of the Council, to be held at UN Headquarters in New York, in April/May 1976.
