The Republic of Mali consists primarily of a vast plain in the upper basin of the Senegal River and part of the Niger, with an extension into the Sahara. The country is mainly agricultural, and millet, rice and peanuts are the chief crops. Cotton, Rubber and river fishing are also important, as is the raising of livestock. Mali, which became a member of the UN in September, 1960, has a population of about 5 million. The capital city is Bamako.
