Economic Development in Gabon
Caption Description
The greater part of Gabon's land area is covered with thick tropical forests, and there is a strong demand on world markets for Gabon's timber, particularly okoume, one of the most valuable tropical woods for the manufacture of plywood. But commercially exploitable timber in the forest areas along the coast and navigable rivers is nearly exhausted, and transportation difficulties have hindered exploitation in the interior. The Government of Gabon, assisted by the UN Development Programme with the International Bank for Reconstruction & Development as executing agency, is therefore engaged in the construction of roads to open the interior of the country, called the ""second zone"", to logging operations. The proposed construction of a railway connecting the northeast with the coast will also contribute to the expansion of forest industries in the country as a whole.
Logs floated down the River Ogooue arrive at Owendo on the coast.
