Fisheries Development in Mali
Caption Description
Under the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization is providing the Government of Mali with advice and assistance in improving the handling and processing of fish and the storage and distribution of smoked and unsalted fish products. Improvement of fish processing entails introduction of more hygenic conditions, better packing and transport methods, fumigation of fish, and freezing of fresh fish. Other aspects of the project include a study of new markets for export, organization of fish markets in Mopti and Bamako, and development of new fish products in Mali. The use of insecticides in areas where fish are processed, the use of solar energy transmitted via plastic sheets and smoking ovens in fumigation of fish, the use of refrigerated trucks in transport of fish to market, and use of stronger and more effective packing materials, have all led to a decrease in fish lost through spoiling. UN/FAO expert Andrew Szabo (Israel) has also made a study of development of new fish products, including a highprotein granulated fish meal.
