Food Processing Laboratory to be Opened in Damascus (Syria)
Caption Description
As part of a five-year programme designed to improve Syria’s food processing industry and make full use of the country’s rich harvests of fruits and vegetables, a food processing laboratory is scheduled to be opened here on 8 October 1963. The first of its kind to be installed in this country and the most modern in the Middle East, the laboratory is being established by the Syrian Government, with the help of the United Nations Special fund.
Here, on the roof of the laboratory building, Dr. Egbert Olthof (l.), Deputy Project Manager, and Mr. Mouhsen S. Issa, and agricultural engineer, inspect solar energy transmitting instruments which are being used for studies to determine how this valuable source of energy can be applied to food processing, Dr. Olthof is a Dutch food specialist on loan to FAO.
