Development of Resources: Mineral Exploration in Colombia
Caption Description
The lifeline of many poor countries is the export of raw materials. If that line is to hold firm, these countries must have stable and equitable prices for the commodities they sell to the industrial world. The resources of land and sea, however, must not be exploited for nationalistic ends, but for the benefit of all mankind.
Using the most easily available transportation in the mountain areas of Colombia, UN expert Derek Norris rides along a tributary of Atrato River exploring mineral-rich areas. Colombia is rich in minerals. The Muzo emerald mines, seventy-five miles from Bogota, have been in operation for 4 centuries. Other minerals are gold, silver, copper, lead, mercury, manganese, coal, platinum, iron and nickel. With help from the UN Development Programme, the Government has undertaken several mineral exploration projects.
