Caption Description
Afghanistan, with an area of 350,000 square miles, is a mountainous land 4,000 feet above sea level. It has frontiers with Iran, Pakistan and the Soviet Union and, at its north-eastern extremity, touches Chinese territory. Towering above Kabul, the capital, are the Hindu Kush Mountains, with an elevation of 16,000 feet and at one point reaching 25,425 feet. Trade to India flows through the Khyber Pass from Kabul to Peshawar. Afghanistan has a population of 14,684,000 (1962 estimate).
