IDA Assistance to Tea Producers in Uganda
Caption Description
Tea growing is well established in Uganda and its teas have gained recognition in world markets. As nearly 90% of the tea acreage of some 26,000 acres is in large estates, the Government is giving emphasis to expanding tea growing in smallholder areas. In many regions tea is the only practicable cash crop which will enable subsistence farmers to achieve a better standard of living. In 1967 the International Development Association (IDA), an affiliate of the World Bank, approved a credit equivalent of $3.4 million to Uganda to assist in financing a programme for the development of tea production by African smallholders. The IDA credit is provided to allow planting of some 9,700 acres of tea together with technical services for the farms involved and for about 4,000 acres of smallholder tea planted prior to 1966, and additional processing facilities. About 5,500 smallholder African farmers are expected to participate in the scheme. It is estimated that when the new tea bushes mature they will contribute about 10 million additional pounds to the present production of some 25 million pounds.
