Medical Research Center in Brazil
Caption Description
Coincident with its production of yellow fever vaccine, the Oswaldo Cruz Institute keeps a colony of monkeys available for year-round research of the disease. Monkeys are an intermediary host for yellow fever. Infected by mosquitoes, they carry the fever and become a source of infection to other mosquitoes which transmit the disease to humans. Periodic checks of monkeys such as these, enable scientists to learn much about the frequency, intensity and duration of the fever.
Here, experts inoculate a monkey with yellow fever vaccine. [No exact date]
