Eradicating the Mediterranean Fruit Fly from Central America
Caption Description
The Mediterranean fruit fly, which attacks more than 240 plant species, is probably the world's most destructive insect pest for fruit and coffee crops. Since 1955 it has infested all the countries of Central America and, if uncontrolled, it has the potential for inflicting $82 million worth of damage there annually. In 1965, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as executing agency, began assisting various Central American government agencies in a regional effort to eradicate the species by rearing male flies that have been sterilized with gamma rays.
