The first session of the United Nations General Assembly opened on 10 January 1946 at Central Hall in London, United Kingdom. 
Trygve Lie of Norway addresses the General Assembly on the occasion of his formal appointment as first Secretary-General of the United Nations, on 2 February 1946.

On behalf of his father, John D. Rockefeller III presented Secretary-General, Tyrgve Lie, with a check for $8,500,000 for the purchase of the 6-block Manhattan East River site where the United Nations will build its permanent headquarters. Mr. Lie exhibits the check for the East River site. Ceremony took place on the first anniversary of the Security Council in New York.
