Headline Drug Abuse Control in Thailand

Caption Description At the request of the Government, the United Nations has introduced a comprehensive programme for drug abuse control in Thailand. The programme includes an agricultural sector aiming at the progressive elimination of opium poppy cultivation in the hill-tribe areas in the north through the introduction of new crops, the improvement of animal husbandry and the development of other sources of income for the farmers. A treatment and rehabilitation sector aims at the reduction of drug addiction in the urban and rural districts of the country. Other sectors deal with the prevention of drug abuse through education and information. Law enforcement measures are being strengthened, by the Thai authorities assisted through bilateral channels and in close co-ordination with the UN programme. The work of the programme started in September 1972.
Thai counterpart staffs of the project assist hill-tribe farmers in marketing their opium-substitute produce. [c. 1973]
