Caption Description
Thirty countries today in Geneva signed the Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, the Slave Trade and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery, the text of which was agreed upon at a conference held from 13 August to 4 September. The purpose of the Convention is to bring up to date the agreements concluded under the 1926 Slavery Convention.
Mr. Emilio Calderon Puig, of Mexico, who presided over the ceremony, is seen here signing the document on behalf of his government. Looking on is Mr. John P. Humphrey, Director of the Division of Human Rights of the United Nations.
