Drafting Conference for International Convention on Slavery
Caption Description
A U.N. diplomatic conference to prepare and adopt a new international convention on slavery got under way on 13 August here in Geneva. The new convention will supplement and bring up to date the agreements made under the anti-slavery convention of 1926. The latter is still in force but is confined mainly to crude types of chattel slavery and traffic in human beings. The supplementary convention will cover not only the abolition of slavery and slave trade, but also institutions and practices similar to slavery, for instance, the practice of debt bondage, serfdom, bride-price, inheritance of a woman on the death of her husband, and abuses arising from the adoption of children.
Seen here (from 1. to r.) during one of the meetings, are: Mr. Egon Schwelb, Deputy Director of the Division of Human Rights of the U.N.; Mr. John P. Humphrey, Director of the same Division, Executive Secretary of the Conference; Mr. Emilio Calderon Puig, of Mexico, Chairman; and Mr. Mousheng Lin, also of the Human Rights Division.
