Headline Aid for Refugees
Caption Description Of some 180,000 refugees from Algeria now in Morocco and Tunisia, many are in a desperate situation. Following requests for help from the Governments of Morocco and Tunisia, and a resolution adopted in December 1958 by the United Nations General Assembly, the High Commissioner for Refugees asked the League of Red Cross Societies to organize the emergency relief action in the two countries. Member societies from many parts of the world are striving to bring together the basic relief items needed, or to provide funds for on-the-spot procurement, for local distribution through the Red Crescent Societies in both areas.

The High Commissioner has appealed to Governments and private sources for financial support, as well as donations in kind, in order to maintain the minimum nutritional standard of 1,600 calories per day. The League has expressed serious concern at the shortages of sugar, oil and milk supplies, which are particularly critical since 85% of the refugees are women and children.

Some of the refugees are sheltered in tattered tents such es these pitched on the barren hills of Ouad R'man in Tunisia. There are no real camps in the European sense of the word, merely clusters of people in need.
