Drought in Africa
Caption Description
Drought is ravaging the continent of Africa. And famine is a harsh reality for millions of people living there.
Emergency food and water supplies are a first necessity. But for the long-term many complex problems - political as well es environmental - have to be solved.
A Baobab tree in Lompoul. Known in African folk lore as "The Tree of Life", with a trunk that can attain a diameter of 30 feet, the Baobab can be hollowed out to provide shelter. Its tremendous span of branches provides shade. Food and medicines
are derived from its fruit while its bark furnishes a strong fibre for rope or cloth. [March 1984]
