Caption Description Security Council President Arnold Peter van Walsum (Netherlands) reads out a statement on behalf of the Council, welcoming the successful popular consultation in East Timor but condemning the violence which has surrounded the balloting and expressing condolences to the families of United Nations local staff and others who were killed. The East Timorese voted overwhelmingly on 30 August against a special autonomy arrangement with Indonesia in favour of a transition to independence.
