Liberation movements have been fighting Government forces in the Portuguese dominated territories in African for a decade and more. In the words of the Angolan Leader, Agostinho Neto, they are working "to free and modernize our peoples by a dual revolution-against their traditional structure which can no longer serve them and against colonial rule". The United Nations has recognized the liberation movements as "the authentic representatives" of their peoples. The struggle in Mozambique is spearheaded by Frelimo (Frente de Liberacao de Mocambique) the Mozambique Liberation Front which claims control over more than a quarter of the country.

Headline Three-member Mission of Committee of 24 Visits Liberated Areas of Guinea (Bissau)
Caption Description A three-member mission of the Special Committee of 24 on decolonization visited (2-8 April) the liberated areas of Guinea (Bissau) at the invitation of The Partido Africano Independencia de Guine e Cabo Verde (PAIGC).  Members of the mission were Horacio Sevilla-Borja (Ecuador), Chairman; Folke Lofgren (Sweden); and Kamel E. Belkhiria (Tunisia). Accompanying this mission were Cheikh Tidiane Gaye, of the UN Department of Trusteeship and Non-Self-Governing Territories, and Yutaka Nagata, of the UN Office of Public Information. The group travelled about 160 miles on foot, day and night, during the seven-day journey; it had been able to establish direct contacts with the people of Guinea (Bissau) and observed various reconstruction programmes being undertaken by the national liberation movement, as well as witnessing, at first-hand, the social, economic, educational and other conditions in the liberated areas.
Mr. Lofgren is seen here with 2nd grade students at the Aerolino Lopez Cruz Boarding School located in the Cubucare Sector, Southern Zone, Guinea (Bissau). The text book being used is printed with the help of Swedish aid to PAIGC. The school, which was visited by the members of the Mission, was named after the teacher who died while protecting the students during a Portuguese air raid in 1965.
