A view of the visitor's lobby of the General Assembly building during the high-level week of the seventy-second session.
A detail view of the Trusteeship Council Chamber during the Summit of the Future Action Day Two.
The flags outside UN Headquarters are raised manually by UN Security Officers every weekday morning at approximately 8 am and lowered every weekday at around 4 pm, except in cases of bad weather. The 193 Member States of the United Nations are each assigned a flagpole, organized in English alphabetical order from north to south at UN Headquarters. In 2015, its non-member observer States (Holy See and the State of Palestine) got assigned their own flagpoles. On weekends, only the UN flag is raised. However, during UN General Assembly high-level week held in September each year, the flags of the UN and the world remain flying around the clock.

A view of the sun rising behind Long Island City and the sculpture, "Good Defeats Evil", by Zurab Tsereteli, in the north garden area of UN Headquarters. The sculpture depicts St. George slaying the dragon. The Dragon here is made from actual parts of a Soviet SS-20 and an American Pershing II nuclear missiles, and represents the specter of nuclear war. The sculpture was presented to the UN by the Soviet Union in 1990 and commemorates the dismantling of the missiles under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty signed 8 December, 1987 by Presidents Ronald Reagan of the United States and Mikhail Gorbachev of the Soviet Union.

A detail of the “Non-Violence” or “Knotted Gun” sculpture by artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd on the UN Visitors Plaza.

Then Secretary-General Kofi Annan said about the sculpture in 1999, “It has enriched the consciousness of humanity with a powerful symbol that encapsulates, in a few simple curves, the greatest prayer of man; that which asks not for victory, but for peace.”

Caption Description Photograph showing the large hand-woven curtain installed in the Economic and Social Council chamber at United Nations Headquarters. The curtain, donated to the United Nations by the  Government of Sweden, covers a 25x75ft. window overlooking the East River. Woven of wool and linen in varying shades of red, orange, purple, beige and blue, with a multi-colored pattern of mussels, it was designed by Marianne Richter of the Märta Maas-Fjetterstrom studios in Bastad, Southern Sweden. It is the largest curtain of its kind ever made in Sweden, weighing some 770 lbs., and covering an overall area of approximately 200 square meters.
